Our last two days were spent learning more about the history, namely by visiting the Citadel, an impressive fortress overlooking the city, and its military museum. Beside the British – French conflicts that characterized much of Canada’s early history and the War of 1812 with the United States, Canadian military forces played a key role on the world stage in European and Middle Eastern conflicts. During the two World Wars, Halifax played an important role as a port from which merchant convoys, protected by navy ships, carried critical supplies across the Atlantic.

We provisioned the boat for the next leg Southwest along the “Bluenose” or Southern coast of Nova Scotia toward the Bay of Fundy, which separates Nova Scotia from New Brunswick and Maine. Incidentally, a nickname given to inhabitants of Nova Scotia is “Bluenosers”. It’s not only because of the famous sailboat mentioned previously, but supposedly Nova Scotians migrating to mainland Canada we’re know to bring a variety of potatoes that are blue in color and share the same nickname.

We capped off our stay in Halifax by inviting Hélène, Benoît, Cheri and Jon aboard True North for an apéritif, featuring homemade Sangria. Where we come from, an apéritif is a pre-dinner drink and snack that usually lasts an hour or two. Well, seven hours later and well past midnight the party was still going strong, with storytelling, dancing, singing and even a competition for the goofiest advertising video. It was so much fun, and we so appreciate these four friends.

Coming next… Leaving to Lunenburg

i

Halifax Harbour

A Sailor’s Town

Farewell to Halifax Party

[25

post-1527","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-2023-down-east-circle-route
["GET
