This Island is also known as Monkey Island because of a population of retired research monkeys that were released there. We didn&#8217;t see any, but we heard them.<\/p><p>After a starry night at anchor, we left at first light to make our way to the city of Charleston.<\/p><p>Many boaters going up or down the east coast take the Intracoastal Waterway. This is an inland waterway that parallels much of the east coast of the United States. With Fregata&#8217;s 73 foot mast and 7 foot draft, this is not an option as there are many fixed bridges offering no more than 65 feet of clearance as well as shifting shoals under water.<\/p><p>There are inlets from the ocean to protected waters along the way, enabling stops for the night, although there are stretches of coast that require several days of sailing with no inlets deep enough to accomodate sailboats.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d2879b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"4d2879b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ffad215 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ffad215\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Departures are timed according to various criteria, such as:<\/p><ul><li>Leaving on an ebbing tide to get a push from the current<\/li><li>Entering and exiting shallow inlets on a rising tide to make sure that if we hit bottom (there are shifting sandbars just outside many of the inlets), we have some flood tide left to lift us off<\/li><li>Arriving at slack tide to facilitate docking because marinas are often on rivers with strong currents.<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>We tied up at Charleston City Marina, known for its &#8220;megadock&#8221;, a 500 meter long dock with visiting vessels tied up on either side.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Charleston is a beautiful city, full of history and surprises. The people we met are friendly. A few highlights include:<\/div><div><ul><li>It is known as the holy city because of the number of churches of different denominations.<\/li><li>It was the primary port in the days of slavery, through which 40% of saves brought to N. America passed.<\/li><li>It retains ties to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gullahgeecheecorridor.org\/thegullahgeechee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gullah Geechee<\/a>\u00a0culture and language<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>On Wednesday evening, we enjoyed walking through Harleston Village (yes, it&#8217;s spelled correctly), a quiet residential neighborhood with palm-lined streets, and the French Quarter. For dinner, we tried two local specialities: she-crab soup and shimp &amp; grits, both delicious.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>On Thursday, we took a tour of Charleston, focusing on African American history and the Gullah people. This tour included a stop at the shop of world-famous iron-wright, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_Simmons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philip Simmons<\/a>, who&#8217;s wrought iron gates adorn many homes and public buildings in Charleston, and are featured in the Smithsonian Museum and other museums around the world. We capped off the day with dinner at Chez Nous, a quaint French-inspired restaurant.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Friday we walked a big part of the city with stops at the pineapple fountain, the city market and King Street, the main commercial thoroughfare.<\/div><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Finally, on Saturday, after a stop at Publix to provision for the next legs of the trip, we visited the Old Slave Mart Museum. This museum, on the grounds of the predominate slave trading market in the 19th century, recounts the history of slavery throughout the world in the last millenium. It&#8217;s easy to take freedom for granted when you have it, but it wasn&#8217;t long ago that many humans were considered property, largely in South America, Europe and the United States. We were surprised to learn that the United States only accounted for 4-5% of slave trade, largely outnumbered by Brazil, Mexico, Jamaica, Haiti and several European colonial powers. It&#8217;s also shocking to note that slavery continues to this day, concentrated in Africa and the Indian subcontinent.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>This is a surprisingly interesting town. It&#8217;s clean and safe. People are polite and respectful. One example is that whenever you cross the street, at a light or not, cars stop and give you right of way. In the Northeast, this would result in being honked at and possibly a rude gesture for getting in the way!<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>In stark contrast to the genteel feel, the city is also supposed to be one of the most haunted in America, with ghost appearances a regular occurrence. We didn&#8217;t meet any, fortunately.<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d159353 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d159353\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f6510cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f6510cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Can you speak Gullah?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b0f8db elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2b0f8db\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Gullah is a language historically spoken by slaves on the low country islands of Georgia and South Carolina, based on a mix of African, Caribbean and English. The door that appears to be the front door, opens onto the porch and the main entrance to the house is on the side.
