It commemorates a legendary meeting of 4 cantonal leaders who entered a mutual defense pact against the Hapsburgs.<\/p><p>The two places actually do have something in common&#8230; democracy. Switzerland was the first democracy in Europe, dating back to 1848. It espouses the values of:<\/p><ul class=\"flex list-inside flex-col gap-2.5 p-0 list-disc\"><li class=\"c-list-item text-standard text-dark-gray pb-2.5\">Separation of powers<\/li><li class=\"c-list-item text-standard text-dark-gray pb-2.5\">Two chambers of parliament<\/li><li class=\"c-list-item text-standard text-dark-gray pb-2.5\">Canton (state&#8217;s) rights<\/li><li class=\"c-list-item text-standard text-dark-gray pb-2.5\">Free elections<\/li><li class=\"c-list-item text-standard text-dark-gray pb-2.5\">Human rights<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Sound familiar? While American democracy is under threat, Maine remains one of the purest democracies in the country with accessible, transparent government, a unique electoral system, and respect of human
