Late Summer Already?

The weather has started to turn to that crisp, late summer coolness, reminding us that the season won’t last forever.

Sunday, we took Didier and Sandrine for a delicious American breakfast at the Buttermilk Kitchen in Camden before seeing them off after an unforgettable week together.

After doing laundry, cleaning the boat and doing some routine maintenance we relaxed in Camden for the rest of the day. While we’re delighted to have so many visitors this summer, we didn’t really expect everyone we invited to accept. But they did! So in the end, we will have spent more of the season with guests onboard than not.

On one hand, it’s great. Spending time with friends in a a 54 x 15 foot space is a great way to get to know each other better. And we enjoy seeing our friends catch our enthusiasm for coastal Maine. But we weren’t able to accommodate family this season. Next summer, we look forward to just having family onboard and, mostly, spending more time as a couple.

But if I say so myself, we run a damned good floating bed & breakfast 😀!

We are starting to feel the signs of laste summer with the temperatures dropping to 50º F (10º C)  at night and barely getting above (15º C) during the day. But it’s a beautiful time of year with crisp blue skies, red sunsets, and foliage that’s already showing signs of turning.

Monday, we sailed down to Boothbay Harbor and enjoyed two relaxing days there, before pushing on to Falmouth, a suburb of Portland. We took advantage of some downtime to explore housing opportunities in the Portland area, as we’ve been giving some thought to moving our USA-based home to the area for a variety of reasons.

Today, we will move to Portland where we expect our friends Doug and Jane to join us for a few days. Unfortunately, with Hurricane Erin forecast to pass offshore of the area tomorrow, we probably won’t have good sailing conditions. The hurricane isn’t a direct threat, but it’s likely to kick up some big waves and unsettled weather. We’ll explore Portland, maybe take a road trip to Kennebunk Port, and perhaps day sail around the Casco Bay Islands if they provide enough protection.

  1. So much more than a great B&B, Dan! Tour guides, expert chef(s), board game officianados, not to mention chief engineer and lobster pot navigator. We had the trip of a lifetime on board! 🙏😘

  2. We had a wonderful time, despite not sailing into the open sea. Beautiful Maine weather. Look forward to spending time again- after allowing the multitude of others dibs before us again!

  3. If you are tired of being hosts, we would gladly welcome you as guests aboard LoDolce Vita VII. A bit more crowded though.

  4. Yes, Great BB&B! You definitely need some “US” time and will have it after we depart the Great BB&B next Sunday😜

  5. A great week of surf in North Carolina! Nothing like a long period large swell! Come visit soon!

  6. Caroline and I started out cruising adventures inviting all of our friends and family. I recall zooming around the Easter Caribbean. At one point we dropped friends off in St. Vincent and immediately left for a 2.5 day sail to St. Thomas to pick up my son and family. After 9 winters in the Caribbean, the last time there were only two people on the boat.

    1. It’s a balancing act, Moby. We’re delighted our friends joined us. But it’s important to have time to onself as well as you point out.
