Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay

Casco Bay is an interesting archipelago offshore from Portland.

Casco Bay is one of two significant archipelagos offshore from Down East Maine. The Penobscot Bay, further northeast, radiates from the mouth of the Penobscot River with hundreds of islands stretching from Bar Harbor down to Rockland. The Casco Bay, further southwest, is offshore from the Portland area. Many Casco Bay islands are inhabited year-round, being only a short ferry ride from downtown Portland, and close to Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Yarmouth and Freeport, where much of the state’s population resides.

After the concert, we sailed 70 nautical miles back to Camden, and enjoyed a nice 15-20 beam reach for part of the ride.

Fregata is not a light wind boat, but when the wind tops 15 knots, she really comes into her own. It’s such a contrast with True North. With 20 knots, we’d be reefed down and heeling. Fregata let’s you know who’s the boss, remaining stately and graceful in stronger winds. No complaints about her performance under sail as we topped 9 knots with 17 knots of true wind.

  1. I love when you speak nautical talk! I don’t know what you’re saying, but I love it all the same!
