The unseasonably cold weather didn’t deter spirits during this annual event that attracts visitors from around the world to celebrate lobsters and lobstering.
It’s ironic that, not too long ago, such a culinary delicacy was considered garbage. Lobsters carpeted the ocean floor but nobody wanted them. At one point, they were fed to prisoners, resulting in prison riots in protest.
It’s quite a different story today. This $400 million industry is emblematic of Maine. Rockland considers itself the lobster capital of the world and hosts this festival the first weekend of August and the days leading up to it.
The festival includes crowning the Lobster Festival Delegate (or what we call “Ms. Lobster”), live music, amusements, a road race, and various exhibits. And, of course, lots of lobster and other seafood.
