One reader asked about the pros and cons of a larger bluewater boat vs. a coastal production boat for long range cruising. Here’s our (subjective) view of the pros and cons of a larger boat, based on our experience with Fregata, an Amel 50, as compared to True North, a Beneteau 41.1 Oceanis

Pros

  • Comfort (space, equipment, privacy)
  • Stability
  • More flexibility (can sail in more conditions)
  • Dryer and warmer in enclosed center cockpit
  • Storage
  • Guest capacity and comfort
  • Speed under power
  • Autonomy (fuel, water, power)
  • Quieter (separate engine room)
  • Ease (electric furlers, winches, davits, etc.)
  • Safety on deck

Cons

  • Speed under sail (does fine at 20 knots, but slower in lighter winds)
  • Operating, maintenance, dockage and storage costs
  • Complexity (more technology means more things to maintain / repair)
  • Draft and mast height limit waters (i.e. no ICW, need deeper anchorages, etc.)
  • Visibility (helm farther from action)
